Ever feel like society has convinced you as a Christian mom that being at home with your kiddos doesn’t count as “real work”? I’ve been there, stuck in the endless cycle of diapers, meals, and bedtime routines, wondering if my days even had meaning beyond the chaos.
Everywhere you turn, the message is the same: women need a purpose outside the home, something “bigger” than wiping noses and folding laundry. As a Christian mom, it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that our God-given call to nurture our families is somehow less valuable than a nine-to-five career.
I’ll admit, when I had my second baby just 14 months after my first, I was convinced my role as a stay-at-home mom was nothing but “busy work.” I worried that by keeping my girls out of daycare, I was holding them back, as well as myself.
Maybe you’ve felt the same way: the nagging doubt that your daily sacrifice doesn’t amount to much in a world that prizes productivity and “me time.”
But here’s the truth: our purpose as Christian moms runs far deeper than folding yet another load of laundry.
In this post, we’ll dive into what Scripture says about our calling and why the humble tasks we do at home are part of a grand, eternal design that’s more significant than we often realize.
Purpose of a Christian Mom
#1 Teach Your Children About Yahweh
“And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.” – Deuteronomy 6:6-7 NLT
One of the biggest purposes of a Christian Mom is to teach your Children about God. To tell them about his goodness, teach them about who God is, what He has done, and what He will do in the future, including His creation and all things of God.
#2 Love
“Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:39 NLT
This isn’t just about Sunday mornings at church. It means loving your toddler even when they dump grapes on the floor for the third time that day or when they wake up on the wrong side of the bed.
Children NEED love; they need to feel love and see love. Most importantly, they need love when they’re in their most unloveable moments. When they’re on their third tantrum of the day, you need to show them no matter what they do, mama will always love them, even in their most unlovable moments in life.
#3 Discipline & Instruct
“…bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4 NLT
Children need to be disciplined. It’s good for them. Not only do they need to be disciplined but also to be led to the Lord and explained what they did was wrong. Not only in your eyes, but also in God’s eyes.
Don’t build the attitude of “because I say so”; instead, point to it because “God says so” and His Word is full of knowledge and true.
#4 Tender Care
“…take tender care of those who are weak…” – 1 Thessalonians 5:14 NLT
Children require a great deal of attention, engagement, and tender care. It can crush a child’s spirit if we minimize their needs simply because they’re “just kids.”
Taking tender care of your little ones can look like sympathizing with them when they’re going through something they view as hard. Cupping your little one’s face and letting them know how much God and you love them and how you’ll care for them. Being gentle with your words and actions towards them.
#5 Encourage & Build Them Up
“So encourage each other and build each other up…” 1 Thessalonians 5:11 NLT
Encourage your little ones to continue building their faith in God. Build their confidence in Christ.
Ground them in The Word this way: they’re not relying on the world to guide them, for the world is so inconsistent with what they even want or think.
#6 Teach & Counsel
“Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives.” Colossians 3:16 NLT
The Bible guides your life and your family. Use it to teach, to sing, for guidance, for encouragement, and to fill your children’s lives with the rich message about Christ.
#7 Speak With Kindess
“Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.” – Colossians 4:6 NLT
The Word says that “gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and healthy to the body.” Proverbs 16:24
Speak kindness to your little ones. They believe and feel everything that you say. Even when the questions are uncomfortable, or they involve confessing a sin, answer graciously. You can cut the bridge of trust and love when you answer harshly with unkind words.
Watch your tone while you’re speaking. Instead of yelling, speak with a calm voice. Don’t answer with sarcasm.
#8 Tender Hearted Mercy
“Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy…” – Colossians 3:12 NLT
Your kids will make mistakes and say things they shouldn’t, but God calls you to clothe yourselves with tender-hearted mercy.
Having tender-hearted mercy means responding with compassion rather than harshness and offering comfort, forgiveness, and support as you walk alongside your children.
#9 Pray for Your Children
“Never stop praying.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 NLT
I do wholeheartedly believe satan goes after your children. If he gets your child, he gets a whole generation.
For this reason, never stop praying for your children, even if they’re old.
If you ask me, no matter how old my little ones get, they’re still babies in my eyes.
Pray. Pray. Pray.
#10 To not Aggravate or Provoke
“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them.” – Ephesians 6:4 NLT
“Fathers, do not aggravate your children, or they will become discouraged.” – Colossians 3:21 NLT
These scriptures start with “fathers,” but I think mothers can also provoke children to anger or aggravate them. I believe mothers have a profound impact on the emotional well-being of their children, as they tend to spend the majority of their time with them.
A few examples can look like this…
Yelling, because they didn’t listen the first five times you asked them to do something calmly.
Aggravating your children unintentionally by constantly micromanaging everything they do ALL DAY LONG.
Having inconsistent rules and expectations.
The biggest one is comparing siblings. Nothing discourages your children more than comparing them to each other.
Importance of a Christian Mom
“You will always harvest what you plant.” – Galatians 6:7 NLT
This scripture should always encourage you to be the mom God calls you to be. All the wisdom He provides in the scriptures is for the well-being of all his children.
If you are always yelling, breaking bridges, having inconsistent rules, micromanaging, you are going to harvest a resentful and discouraged children.
If you handle complex topics with love, answer in wisdom, and encourage and build up your children, you will have strong ties with them.

Self-Control
Self-control is foundational for every Christian mom. Without it, the other fruits of the Spirit can’t fully flourish. After all, how can you teach your children to manage their emotions or resist impulses if you haven’t first learned to do the same?
Developing self-control begins with self-awareness: notice what triggers your impatience or anger and pause before reacting. When you feel that familiar tension, whether it’s frustration at spilled milk or the chaos of bedtime, take a deep breath, pray a quick “Lord, help me,” and choose a calmer response.
Motherhood has a way of revealing hidden selfishness and unkind habits we didn’t even realize were there. But because we bear God’s image, we aren’t stuck in those patterns. By asking God for help, practicing small moments of restraint (like speaking gently instead of snapping), and reflecting daily on what went well and what needs adjustment, you’ll gradually grow in Spirit-empowered self-control. And as you model that discipline, your little ones will learn to follow suit.

The purpose of a Christian mother is essential when viewed through a biblical lens. After all, it was a woman who gave birth to Jesus Christ.
View it through a worldly lens, and motherhood starts to feel more like a burden as if your kids are holding you back from what is truly important or what you want in life.
This is why it is so important to stay rooted in The Word and constantly pray to Yahweh.
