Before we dive into these principles, remember that although there isn’t a specific motherhood method, these timeless biblical principles can help you build a solid foundation in your parenting. This foundation is unshakable when applied according to scripture.
What are Biblical Parenting Principles
Biblical parenting means intentionally raising children in accordance with God’s Word. Parents lovingly guide, disciple, discipline, and model a life that honors Christ.
The goal isn’t perfect children. The goal is hearts that know, obey, love, and follow God. Biblical parenting shapes a child’s character and teaches them the truth. It points them to the gospel through both instruction and example.
What Biblical Parenting Does Not Mean
Learning and instilling Biblical Parenting Principles does not make you the perfect mother, and that is a good thing!
In your weakness on this journey, Yahweh’s power is made perfect. You will fall, but that’s where your children must see you praying, reading God’s Word, and seeking forgiveness.
What a privilege we have in being trusted with God’s children!
Biblical Parenting Principles For Christian Moms
#1 Love Yahweh Your God
The biggest Biblical Principle that will never change and stands before anything else is “to love Yahweh your God with all your heart, soul, and mind.”
Deuteronomy 6:4 “Listen, O Israel! Yahweh is our God, Yahweh alone. And you must love Yahweh your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.”
As a Christian mom, you have to show your love for God to your children and teach them that, individually, they must love Yahweh with their own hearts.
To love God means you fear Yahweh and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul. Always obeying His commands and decrees. Deut 10:12-13
#2 Love Your Neighbor
Matthew 22:39 “and a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Loving your neighbor comes second to loving God.
Loving your neighbor starts by loving everyone who lives in your household, and of course, everyone else.
Displaying love at home is hard because everyone knows each other’s good and bad sides. But God calls you, as a Christian mama, to love no matter what.
#3 Train Your Children
Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
You are called to train up your child in the way he should go.
It’s a daily responsibility that requires you to be intentional and present.
Training requires intentionality and presence. Understand why your little one exhibits certain behaviors, as children often learn behaviors from their environment.
It is your job as a mom to train a behavior out of your little one or to continue training and building good characteristics.

#4 Discipline
Proverbs speaks about disciplining your children. It also warns about the consequences for parents who do not discipline.
Proverbs 19:18 “Discipline your children while there is hope. Otherwise, you will ruin their lives.”
Proverbs 23:13 “Don’t fail to discipline your children. The rod of punishment won’t kill them.”
Proverbs 29:17 “Discipline your children, and they will give you peace of mind and will make your heart glad.”
Discipline shapes your child’s character. It doesn’t always involve physical punishment, and not every approach works for every child. Discipline means setting clear boundaries, following through, and correcting with love and consistency.
For some children, time out can be an effective consequence, especially if they do not want to miss out on activities. For other children, a different consequence may be more effective. Understanding what works for your child is important.
A rule from Christian Parenting books is to never discipline in anger. If it is a serious offense and you are angry, send your little one to their room. Wait until you can control yourself. Then, speak to them with gentleness.
#5 Obedience
1 John 2:3-6 “And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”
Acts 5:9 “…We must obey God rather than man.”
God teaches and calls you as a Christian mom to obey his commands; that is what loving God means.
He can also help you as a Christian mom to teach your children to obey. How you do that in your home may look different from how we do it in our home.
One of the best ways I have found to encourage your little ones to obey is to let your yes mean yes and your no mean no. (James 5:12) Children are so smart, especially when they want to get their way. They might try to whine until they crack you or scream until you finally give up and just hand it to them. They have to know, though, that yes means yes and no means no.
Scripture always gives us guidance on how to teach children to obey.

#6 Displaying the Fruits of the Spirit
The fruits of the spirit are “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self-control, and faithfulness” (Galatians 5:22).
Teaching these qualities to your children is essential, for these are the marks of the spirit.
- Love—show love even during tantrums, rebellion, talkback, and hard seasons.
- Joy – Can only come from God and is not circumstantial.
- Peace—being a peacekeeper is different from being a peacemaker. Not correcting behavior just to keep peace is not real peace. Correct the behavior, then experience peace.
- Patience—practice self-control, especially during hard seasons or frequent tantrums.
- Kindness—show compassion and generosity to others, including your children.
- Goodness –
- Gentleness – Gentle answers deflect anger,
- Faithfulness—trust God through all seasons of life.
- Self-control—be sober, calm, and master your personal desires and passions.
Instilling the fruits of the Spirit in your little ones produces a life that pleases God.
#7 Forgiveness
Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
Forgiveness can mend all things, and it should be a priority for all Christian Mothers to do and show their children what forgiveness looks like.
Once you discipline harshly or speak unkindly to your children, ASK for forgiveness. It is crucial to display forgiveness. You are not a perfect mother. You may act or speak before thinking, and once you realize you were in the wrong, it is YOUR duty as a Christian Mom to ask for forgiveness.
It doesn’t make you weak, nor does it make kids lose respect for you when you ask for forgiveness; instead, it does the opposite! It can help you build a strong foundation with your child. You have been called to teach your child all things about God, and one of God’s amazing attributes is forgiveness.
Biblical Parenting
Biblical parenting means directing children to a perfect God, not being a perfect mother.
When you apply these principles—loving God fully, loving others, training your children, disciplining with intention, displaying the fruits of the Spirit, and practicing forgiveness—remember that your strength comes from God, not from being perfect.
There will be hard days. Days when you lose your patience, speak before you think, or feel like you’re falling short. But those moments are not failures; they are opportunities to model exactly what you’ve been teaching: repentance, humility, and the faithfulness of a God who never gives up on us.
Your children don’t need a flawless mother. They need one who points them to God through love, perseverance, and faith.
